Getting started

WP Media Cloud offloads your WordPress media library to cloud storage. When a file is uploaded to WordPress, WP Media Cloud moves it to your configured storage provider and rewrites the attachment URL so WordPress serves it from the cloud instead of your server. Your media library works exactly as normal in the WordPress admin. The only difference is where the files live.

This document covers what WP Media Cloud does, who it is for, and what to expect before you start.

What WP Media Cloud does#

Every image, video, document, and file uploaded to WordPress lands in wp-content/uploads on your server by default. On a busy site this directory grows quickly and becomes a significant portion of your hosting bill, your backup size, and your server’s disk usage.

WP Media Cloud intercepts the upload process and moves the file to a cloud storage bucket on a provider of your choice. It then updates the WordPress attachment record so every URL that WordPress generates for that file points to the cloud location instead of your server. Nothing else in WordPress changes. Your media library, your page builder, your custom fields, and your WooCommerce store all continue to work exactly as before.

What it does not do#

WP Media Cloud offloads files that pass through the WordPress media library. It does not touch theme files, plugin assets, or any file that sits outside wp-content/uploads. It also does not modify your database structure, change how WordPress stores attachment metadata, or require any changes to your theme or page builder.

Who it is for#

WP Media Cloud is built for WordPress developers and site owners who want to move media off the server for any of the following reasons:

  • Reducing server disk usage and hosting costs
  • Serving media from a global CDN for faster load times
  • Separating media storage from application hosting
  • Using a specific storage provider such as Bunny Edge Storage or Cloudflare R2 that other offload plugins do not support
  • Running WooCommerce with secure signed download links
  • Managing media across multilingual sites with WPML, Polylang, or TranslatePress

Supported storage providers#

WP Media Cloud supports nine storage providers:

  • Bunny Edge Storage
  • Cloudflare R2
  • Amazon S3
  • Wasabi
  • DigitalOcean Spaces
  • Hetzner Object Storage

  • Google Cloud Storage
  • S3-compatible endpoint (MinIO, Scaleway, Vultr, Linode, OVHcloud, and others)
